How to Decide Whether a Press Release Is Worth Publishing

Current · Updated 2026-08-16

A press release works best when a company has real news, a specific audience and verifiable facts. Distribution can extend an announcement’s reach, but it cannot turn routine promotion into a credible story.

Start with the one-sentence news test

Write the announcement in one factual sentence. Then ask why someone outside the company should care now. If the answer depends only on “we want attention,” the story probably needs a stronger angle.

Signals that an announcement may be newsworthy

  • A product or service launch with a meaningful difference.
  • A partnership, expansion, appointment or acquisition.
  • Original research, verified data or a useful industry finding.
  • A significant milestone with context.
  • An event, award or community initiative with clear relevance.
  • A timely expert response supported by evidence.

Routine discounts, vague “exciting news” and unverified superlatives rarely justify a release.

Gather the proof before writing

Confirm names, dates, locations, product details, company descriptions and claims. Collect an approved quote that adds interpretation rather than repeating the headline. Identify a media contact who can respond quickly.

Credibility rule: every factual claim should be supportable. Replace “revolutionary” with a specific difference readers can evaluate.

Choose the audience and angle

The same event can support different angles for local, trade, business or consumer readers. Choose one primary audience. Explain the impact in their language and avoid trying to make one release relevant to everyone.

Understand what distribution can and cannot do

Distribution can place the release across participating outlets, create a stable reference and support discovery. It does not guarantee independent reporting, rankings, sales or long-term reputation. Those outcomes depend on the story, audience, follow-up and wider marketing system.

Press release readiness checklist

  1. The announcement is current and can be stated clearly.
  2. The audience has a reason to care.
  3. Names, claims and links have been verified.
  4. The headline describes news rather than hype.
  5. The opening answers who, what, when, where and why.
  6. The quote adds a useful perspective.
  7. The next step and media contact are clear.

FAQ

Will a press release guarantee media coverage?

No. Distribution and independent editorial coverage are different outcomes.

Can a press release help SEO?

It may support discovery and citations, but it should not be purchased as a guaranteed ranking tactic.

How long should a release be?

Use the space needed to explain the news clearly—often 400 to 700 words—without padding or repeated claims.

Have a real announcement ready?

Review the distribution scope, requirements and realistic expectations before ordering.
